Libertarianz leader Richard McGrath today tackled Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully on his intention to gouge another $12m out of taxpayers for the entertainment of guests during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
“The cost of this junket should be borne by the guests themselves, by Mr McCully, by the Rugby Union, or by anyone else who wants to pay for these people – not by taxpayers.”
“Lower earning New Zealanders have just been decked by National’s pledge-breaking hike in GST. A lot of them are not interested in rugby. Why on earth should they be forced to pay the food, alcohol, rugby ticket and accommodation costs of some bigwig rugby fans?”
“It is insulting and demeaning to the NZ Rugby Union for the government to suggest they couldn’t organise a financially successful international tournament.”
Dr McGrath said the Libertarianz Party supports making the funding of sport a matter of voluntary choice, saying if major events can’t survive on their own merits then they don’t deserve to.”
He said a Libertarianz government would abolish or privatise all ministries and government departments not linked to justice, policing and defence.
“There is no reason for the government to become involved in our hobbies. If elected, my party would slash taxes, and allow New Zealanders to spend their own money according to their personal priorities.”
“It’s a matter of respecting the property rights and privacy of New Zealanders. John Key’s BlueLabour administration clearly has no intention of leaving people to live their lives in peace.”
