“The National Party has abandoned its core values and embraced socialism in its health discussion paper,” said Libertarianz Health Spokesman and Masterton GP Richard McGrath.

“National’s website lists individual freedom and choice, personal responsibility and limited government as critical components of a better society and my party not only agrees but applauds them for it,” he said.

“But the discussion paper mentions further increases in public health spending, maintenance of current GP subsidies, payments for GPs to move their practices into public hospital emergency departments and encouragement for people to arrive unbooked at GP practices.”

“It advocates stopping doctors from leaving the country, and increasing the level of political interference in health industry. Not really consistent with small government and individual choice, is it?” asked Dr McGrath.

“There are a few positive suggestions in the paper – namely reducing personal taxation and the recognition of international medicine approvals so that we could abolish Pharmac, but everything else reads like a watered down version of Labour’s failed health policies.”

“I wish National would stick to their guns. These turgid ‘Labour-Lite’ policies are a major backdown from the health reforms they know they should be promoting.”

“Libertarianz would separate the state from healthcare and leave individuals, families and communities free to explore their options for the development of health services without interference from politicians and bureaucrats.”

“National needs to search their offices for the spine they so obviously lack and match their policies to their stated values. Otherwise, they might as well just roll over and throw their weight behind the re-election of a Labour government.”

“It’s enough to make you vote Libertarianz!”
